Due to an incorrect longitude estimate, the Scilly Isles, off the coast of England, became the grave of 2,000 of Sir Clowdisley’s sailors. On their return from a victorious battle with the French at Gibraltar, on a foggy day, the Association, the Eagle, and the Romney sank—four of the five warships in all. Only two sailors survived the wreck on the rocks; one of them was Sir Clowdisley himself.
