March 1681

England. The short life of the child he had with Maria Beatrice d’Este, wife of James Stuart, born in early March 1681 and died only three days later. The couple’s other children were Catherine Laura (January 21 – October 13, 1675); Isabella (1676-81); and the third child, Charles, Duke of Cambridge (November 7, 1677). However, the child contracted smallpox, probably from Princess Anne, who was recovering from smallpox, and who picked him up during her visit. The child died of smallpox on December 12, 1677. As mentioned, the child he had given birth to in early March 1681 also died almost immediately, and Carla, just three days after birth, in August 1682. Among the unfortunate births, the couple also endured forced exile from London for a period of exile in Brussels, from 1679 to 1684, followed by an obligatory stay in Edinburgh. Charles II died a Catholic on February 6, 1685, and was succeeded by James II, with Mary Beatrice at his side as Queen of England.
