Ole Romer notes that when Jupiter is in opposition to the Sun relative to Earth, the cosmic clock formed by Jupiter’s satellite Io is 22 minutes behind when the planet is in conjunction. He therefore calculates the speed of light at 220,000 km/s, with an error of about 25%.
