Isaac Newton, in a letter to Hooke about a long and protracted dispute, wrote a phrase that would become famous: “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” Here Newton is perhaps mocking Hooke, who is small in stature, implicitly giving him credit for the basis of his discoveries.
