The English Armada, or Counter Armada, led by Francis Drake, attempts, building on the previous year’s success, a counterattack against Spain. The mission fails with heavy losses on the English side. The mission aimed to destroy the Spanish fleet, land in Lisbon and spark a revolt against Philip II, King of Spain, seize the Spanish treasury, and finally conquer the Azores to establish a permanent base.
