Dutchwoman Gemma Frisio (Jemme Reinerszoon, called Frisio, meaning “of Friesland,” the northern part of the Netherlands) pioneered cartography. A graduate of Leuven (now Belgium), in his treatise “Libellus de Locorum describendorum Ratione,” he explained how to use trigonometry to draw precise maps. This also gave birth to geodesy.
