1500 – 1511

The Portuguese organized 12 missions to the Indies. Each lasted 12 months or a little more. The number of ships was enormous each time: 29 in the fifth mission in 1505. Intermediate strongholds were established along the coast: Cannanore (Kannur), Cochin (Kochi), Kollam, Goa, and the island of Socotra.
