Venice supported Pisa in its attempt to free itself from Florence. In doing so, it incurred the ire of Milan. Venice then allied itself with Louis XII, the new king of France. He conquered Milan, and Venice thus acquired the wealthy city of Cremona, in the heart of Lombardy.
