Leonardo da Vinci correctly concluded that perpetual motion was impossible with any machinery. He was particularly fascinated by the idea that it could be achieved with the aid of worm screws that made water rise, but he rightly concluded that it was a vain chimera. This is all recorded in the Madrid Codex, compiled in the last decade of the 15th century.
