Italy. After the death of Muhammad, the Ottoman Empire temporarily ceased to pose a threat, and the Italian states began to squabble again. Venice attacked Ferrara, later supported by Milan and Florence. Initially, it achieved resounding successes, but then the Pope, alarmed, ordered Venice to halt. The Venetians withdrew but, with the peace treaty of 1484, held on to the strategic territory of Polesine, which they had recently conquered.
