The first patent recognized by law was issued in the state of Venice. This was the first patent legislation as we still understand it today. Another demonstration of the Venetian Republic’s extreme foresight and commercial vocation. The first patent (though ad personam, without a law) dates back to Filippo Brunelleschi in Florence in 1421.
