Venice introduced, as a common practice, a regular exchange of diplomats with other states for the first time in Italy and Europe. This practice greatly benefited the diplomatic and commercial skills of the Venetians, as well as the culture of the Republic’s citizens. It gradually spread throughout Europe, giving rise to the modern institution of embassies.
