Venice, after reclaiming Dalmatia from the King of Hungary, and at the height of a booming trade, returned to the prosperous conditions prevailing before the Black Death and the War of Chioggia with the Genoese. It acted as an intermediary in trade between East and West. It levied no direct taxes, only indirect ones through import duties and then export taxes. Only Genoa managed to challenge this dominance.
