In the Mediterranean, particularly in the Ionian and Aegean, piracy was rife, not only among professional pirate gangs, but also among Genoese, Sicilians, Pisans, Ancona natives, Saracens, and Greeks, as well as Venetians, all seeking booty and slaves. This led to the arming of commercial fleets and their sailors.
