Oath of alliance: the Association of Lombardy and the March of Verona, known as the Lombard League, is officially born. The treaty stipulates that no city may cede more to the Empire than had been granted until the accession of Frederick (upon the death of Henry V). Initially, the Lombard cities of Cremona, Brescia, Bergamo, Milan, Piacenza, Lodi, Parma, and Mantua joined, along with the Venetian cities of Venice, Verona, Vicenza, Padua, Treviso, and Ferrara. Within a few months, Bologna, Como, Pavia, Asti, and Alessandria also joined. Genoa, however, refused to give in. The League became a political as well as a military organization.
