Ambush at the Chiuse. Beyond Verona, at the Adige River locks, a contingent of Veronese soldiers prepares an ambush for the knights of Frederick Barbarossa, who is returning to Germany. But they are betrayed by two Veronese nobles loyal to the Empire. The ambushed Veronese are captured, and 500 of them are hanged from trees, others mutilated with their noses, lips, or feet. For Frederick, the outcome of the expedition to Italy is uncertain: he was crowned by the Pope in Rome, but he has encountered incredible difficulties controlling the Italian communes, and the situation is far from consolidated.
