Adelaide, widow of Lothair, King of Italy, took refuge in the castle of Canossa to escape the persecution of Berengario II, Marquis of Ivreache. Wanting to marry her to his son Adalbert, he unsuccessfully besieged Canossa. Otto I, King of Germany (aka Holy Roman Emperor), freed Adelaide and made her his wife, thus promoting the fortune of Atto Adalbert and his successors (the Attonidi).
