The Babylonians, aided by the Medes, conquer Nineveh, the Assyrian capital. And in 609 BC, the last Assyrian king was defeated at Harran. Finally, in 605 BC, the Babylonians defeated the Egyptians, the last power that could stop them, at Carchemish in northern Syria. But the Egyptians would not give up, and incited the local populations to revolt.
