Frederick’s army marches toward Northern Italy. Crossing the Western Alps, they advance into Haute-Savoie and reach Susa, which is devastated by the Teutonic Order, razing the city to the ground and setting it ablaze. Only Pavia and the Marquis of Montferrat remain with the Empire. Frederick chooses as his target the hated Alessandria, the emblem of the Lombard revolt.
