Two armed men enter the courthouse in the \u00c7a\u011flayan district and take prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz hostage in his office. Kiraz is investigating the death of Berkin Elvan, the fifteen-year-old boy who was hit in the head by a tear gas canister during clashes between police and protesters in Gezi Park in the spring of 2013, and died after 269 days in a coma. The two kidnappers are members of the DHKP\/C, the People&#8217;s Revolutionary Liberation Party\/Front, a far-left group founded in the 1990s and responsible for a series of politically motivated terrorist attacks. Late that evening, Turkish security forces intervene. The two kidnappers are killed on the spot.
