Mars Bluff, South Carolina. Walter Gregg and his son are sitting on the porch of their home when a Mark 6 atomic bomb suddenly lands in their yard. His wife is sewing at home, and their two daughters are outside playing with a friend. The tens of kiloton bomb has no nuclear core, but the high explosive in the fuse explodes upon impact, creating a crater 15 meters in diameter and 10 meters deep. The blast shatters all the windows, collapses the roof of the house, kills six chickens, and sends the entire family to the hospital with minor injuries. The bomb was loaded on a B-47 en route from Georgia to England. As soon as it took off, Captain Bruce Kulka receives orders to insert a locking pin into the bomb, but he is unfamiliar with the device. While in the bomb bay searching for the pin, he slips and grabs the bomb’s manual release handle. The bomb falls onto the hatch below, and after a moment, its weight opens it and falls into the void.
