Ike Eisenhower, newly inaugurated, sent several secret messages to Mao and the Chinese, through three emissaries and diplomatic channels, including Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The message stated that if the Korean War did not end soon, the United States might resort to the ultimate weapon. Then, a few weeks later, Stalin died, changing the game. And in June, the Chinese made concessions regarding prisoners of war, paving the way for the ceasefire negotiations, which were signed in July.
