Japanese Unit 731 conducted thousands of experiments on prisoners and experimented with biological (anthrax, plague, and cholera) and chemical weapons. Estimates of Chinese casualties range between 380,000 and 560,000. In May 1945, eight American airmen were also vivisected, without anesthesia. After the end of the war, several Japanese submarines equipped with launch pads for large seaplanes were discovered, designed to drop chemical and biological weapons on American targets: Saipam and San Diego. The leader of Unit 731 was scientist Shiro Ishii. According to some, Ishii was captured by the United States after World War II and collaborated with the Americans in the Korean War. The existence of Unit 731 was officially recognized by Japan only in 2002, and some firsthand accounts from repentant scientists and doctors emerged in 2007.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Manchuria.
