Villa Pentetorri was bombed. It was the Este villa of the Pentetorri (or Count Rainusso), also unusually called the Four Towers, and stood in the greenery of the immediate outskirts of Modena. Designed by order of Francis I, it was designed by the great Reggio architect Gaspare Vigarani (1586-1663), appointed superintendent of the ducal buildings in 1631. The building stood outside Porta Castello along the left bank of the Naviglio, where the Duke’s ship and others from the Ducal Palace docked. Its structure was divided into two distinct architectural portions: the main section, facing east and visible from boats passing along the canal, was adorned with a path that intersected with two other lateral ones to form two axes, flanked by four groups of flowerbeds arranged in a checkerboard pattern with vases, statues, large birdcages, and fountains. During its almost three centuries of splendor, the villa was embellished with works by talented artists: Boulanger and Bianchi under Francesco I, Monti and Bosellini under Alfonso IV, Borsellini under Ercole III and finally Manzini, Crespellani and Lusvardi under the last dukes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
