They are extremely heavy due to the lead plate and suffer from the sloshing sound of the acidic, corrosive liquid, which also emits an incredible stench, similar to horse piss. Gasoline-powered cars are difficult to start: turning the crank by hand when starting them risks breaking your arm. They also require a jarring and dangerous gear shift as you accelerate. Thomas Alva Edison says he&#8217;s willing to bet that electric traction will eventually prevail\u2014perhaps not for cars, but at least for deliveries and taxis. In 1900, steam-powered vehicles accounted for 40% of all vehicles, electric vehicles for 38%, and gasoline-powered vehicles for 22%.
