James Harrison had actually attempted this in 1873, but his system suffered a breakdown during the voyage, and the meat rotted. Harrison tried again in 1879 with the steamship Strathleven, and this time succeeded: it left Melbourne and arrived in London two months later, with 40 tons of frozen beef and lamb.
