Wine vines in France mysteriously begin dying en masse. The bunches dry up, the roots rot. The wine sector employs approximately 35% of the country’s workforce. Jules Emile Planchon, of the Department of Botany at the University of Montpellier, discovers that the plant roots are teeming with tiny, never-before-seen yellowish insects, capable of reproducing without mating. The 83 million hectoliters of French wine are reduced to 24. Within a few years, Italy, Spain, and Germany are also affected, and then the entire world. Then Planchon discovers that the insect originates from America, where it simply sucks the leaves, without touching the roots.
