Second Battle of Bull Run (Manassas). In a diversionary maneuver by Lee, the Confederate army advances toward Washington, D.C., and McClellan is forced to send a large contingent to stop it. The battle takes place in the same area as Bull Run, around the Stone House. The Union defeat is inevitable, but they avoid annihilation by retreating north of the Bull Run River, toward the capital, where they will retreat. On the Federal side, the death toll is 1,724, the wounded 8,372, and the prisoners 5,958, while the Confederates suffer 1,481 deaths, 7,627 wounded, and 89 prisoners. This puts an end to the grand Federal attempt to capture the Confederate capital. The initiative is firmly in the hands of General Lee.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
