The papal army (10,000 men), led by Giovanni Durando, a former Piedmontese exile, reaches advanced positions in northern Austrian Veneto. There are also 7,000 volunteers from Lazio led by the fervent republican Andrea Ferrari. These volunteers are engaged in battle by the Austrians on May 9th, without Durando intervening. After 12 hours of resistance, they are forced to surrender and the battle is lost. This allows the Austrians to bring reinforcements to the Quadrilateral and break the siege.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Veneto.
