The emperor issues an urgent edict to have foreign gunsmiths from Macau at court as soon as possible to counter the Manchu advance on the capital. They consist of four Portuguese experts, led by Gocalo Teizeira Correa, a Chinese interpreter, a Portuguese interpreter (the Jesuit priest Joao Rodrigues), and 24 Indian and African servants. Forty-four kilometers from Beijing, they cross paths with the Manchus, improvise a defense with cannons, and repel the attackers. This persuades the emperor to summon other Western cannon experts to court, including Giacomo Rho, invited by Xu Guangqi, better known as Paolo Xu, the highest ranking member of the court, a convert to Christianity.
